Department for International Trade (DIT) Tokyo team are organising the fifth annual FinTech trade mission to Tokyo to coincide with FIN/SUM (Fintech Summit), organised by Nikkei and the Financial Services Agency of Japan – Tues Sept 3rd to Fri, Sept 6thSeptember 2019

This mission will coincide with Japan’s largest FinTech event, FIN/SUM, giving UK FinTech/Cyber companies an opportunity to learn about the Japanese FinTech market; pitch your product; and develop a strong personal network in Japan. This will be the 5th Fintech trade mission to Japan.

Market: The Japanese FinTech Market size was estimated at ¥1 trillion (£7.6 billion) in 2017. It is expected to nearly double to ¥1.8 trillion (£14.3 billion) by 2021. The interests of the market include challenger banks, security solutions for crypto currency, online lending, insurtech, and cyber security for individuals

What to expect on the 2019 Fintech Mission to Tokyo:

  • Briefing on doing business in Japan - the Japanese fintech market from experts

  • Full access to FIN/SUM (3rd - 6th September), which will include pitch events, seminars, workshops and networking events (the value of a pass last year was £750; this will be covered in the overall price of this mission).  Two tickets per company will be provided.

  • Opportunity to pitch at FIN/SUM and also the “UK FinTech Night” event organised by DIT Tokyo at the Ambassador’s Residence during FIN/SUM inviting Japanese businesses and key stakeholders.

  • The opportunity to enter Nikkei’s  “Pitch Run” competition at FIN/SUM, with the possibility to win monetary prizes (British companies from the previous missions had great success in this competition; in 2018 UK company Onfido won the SBI Group award for Its AI-driven ID verification technology).

  • Opportunities to have discussions with Japanese regulators and other players in the FinTech ecosystem

  • Network with senior executives in banking, insurance, asset management, technology and finance during FIN/SUM

  • Group visits to Japanese companies who are interested in your business.

  • Promotion to local and international media, including social media

  • Company bio in digital and printed mission brochure

About FIN/SUM

FIN/SUM is a fintech conference co-organised by Nikkei (Japan’s largest business daily newspaper and now the owner of FT) and the Financial Services Agency of Japan (JFSA). The event was first held in Sept 2016 as a 2 day conference and from last year it has scaled up to a 4 day event. The event attracted over 6,000 visitors over 4 days last year.

In order to apply, you need to:

- Be a registered company in the UK

- Ideally have been in business for 2 years’ +

Please note that due to the high number and quality of expected applicants, there will be a screening process to decide which companies to select for this mission. We ask for your understanding in advance.  

Costs and Deadlines

Participation fee:  £770 (excluding VAT) to be paid by the end of July. Please note that once accepted and paid, the fee is non-refundable.

Delegates would be responsible for covering their airfare and accommodation.

Applications must be received no later than 17:30 GMT on July 24 2019. Accepted delegates will be notified by 17:30 GMT on July 26 2019
