Meet the Delegates from the UK's Southern England region

Foreword:

Southern England is a vastly important region for the health and life sciences sector. In 2021, the region generated the highest industry share of turnover in the UK at £56.9 billion and has the highest rate of employees in the UK’s life sciences industry at over 50%.

The region is home to the ‘golden triangle’; the world-leading life sciences cluster of London, Oxford, Cambridge, and the greater South East. These clusters are the most productive in Europe and compete internationally. Specialisms include med-tech, pharmaceuticals, genomics, biodata, diagnostics, digital health, and biomedical engineering. It also has the highest global concentration of world-class research and innovation assets, from science parks, businesses, incubators to healthcare providers, industry players and research centres, including the world leading Jenner Institute and the national Vaccine Manufacturing & Innovation Centre.

The area also has four of the world’s top ten universities, nineteen of the top twenty global pharmaceutical companies and world class research centres including the Francis Crick Institute, the Harwell Campus Oxford, and the Sanger Institute Cambridge.

Some of the region’s other specific strengths include:
 

• The largest cell and gene therapy cluster in Europe and third largest globally in Stevenage, Hertfordshire.
   
• The MedTech Accelerator has been set up in the East of England to facilitate the early-stage development of innovations in the broad area of medical technology that meet unmet clinical needs within the NHS. The Medtech Accelerator supports and finances projects at an early stage to maximise the potential for success in bringing new life enhancing technologies to patients.
   
• Launched in 2012, the UK-wide 100,000 Genomes Project will sequence 100,000 genomes in four years; an immensely ambitious project that has never been done on this scale anywhere in the world. Five of the eleven genomic medicine centres are located in London, Oxford, and Cambridge.

The awards recognise the innovation that has boosted efficiency and infection control protocols. 100% of staff now say that they can easily locate equipment (compared with 29% previously), and 90% of users believe that the bag improves Infection Control Compliance (compared with 25% previously). Other bespoke projects we have worked on during the last 12 months include designs for City of London Police, Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS), Penthrox, and the Institute of Manufacturing at Cambridge University.
