Innovate, inspire and exchange: City examples that pave the way towards the future

The future of cities

Focus

Globalisation and technological change have profoundly transformed our economies and societies offering tremendous opportunities. The benefits and disadvantages, however, are quite unevenly spread, creating new, complex problems, the impacts of which are often concentrated in cities. The pace of transformation has also challenged the effectiveness of traditional, top-down and siloed policy responses. Some cities are thus testing new, integrated and collaborative ways of designing solutions engaging and co-creating with citizens to produce better and lasting outcomes. The rise of transnational urban networks along with targeted EU support schemes have multiplied the potential to create and diffuse innovation in urban planning and governance. How could these networks and tools be more effective in connecting tested innovative practices with mainstream policies across the EU?

The session will attempt to achieve three interlinked objectives:
  • Grasp the transformation: capturing the nature of the shift in the practice of urban planning towards a more holistic, open and enabling urban governance, a City 2.0
  • Inspire participants: Learning about and exchanging with leading examples of innovative urban solutions linked to the themes of the partnerships of the urban agenda for the EU
  • Identify future paths: debating how to make the most of existing networks and initiatives to improve urban innovation potential across the EU in the post-2020 period.
