Data and the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals

The urban dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the New Urban Agenda – 1 workshop & site visit

The EU and its Member States, each within their respective competences, recognise their responsibility to promote a transformative agenda for sustainable development domestically, regionally and globally and is fully committed to the ambitious 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The monitoring of progress towards the SDGs at the local, national, regional, and global levels will be key to achieve the SDGs. The international community has already started to develop the necessary tools to measure progress, to work on the indicator framework and its associated monitoring system.

A sound monitoring system and indicator framework will help to turn the SDGs and their targets into a management tool to measure progress, develop implementation strategies, dedicate resources, ensure the accountability, as well as to report.

To this end, data collection and indicators' completeness are both essential at national and local level to monitor progress achieved and to decide on adjustments of implementation. The generated data should be transparent, openly accessible and disaggregated as appropriate to capture existing inequalities and efforts to promote inclusive development.

The workshop will bring different perspectives and experiences in an interactive discussion that aims to share and discuss possible developments and collaborative solutions that could contribute to the collective effort of achieving the SDGs.
