EXPRESSION OF INTEREST: Trade Mission to Mexico 2024: Food & Drink sector

The Department for Business & Trade are pleased to announce recruitment is now open for a trade mission to Mexico focusing on the Food & Drink sector taking place from the 11th to 15th March. This mission will support 20 UK companies operating in the food and drink sector.

Why Mexico?

Mexico is a strategic gateway to both the US, Canada and the rest of Latin America. The US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) came into force on 1 July 2020. Also, Mexico has 13 Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with 50 countries—including NAFTA, the EU, Japan, Israel, 10 Latin American countries. It is also one of the most open economies in the region.

In May 2022, negotiations launched on a new UK-Mexico free trade agreement (FTA). The deal seeks to make exporting goods and services online smoother and help British businesses expand more quickly. Also, the UK concluded negotiations to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) on 31 March 2023 and signed the Protocol of Accession on 16 July 2023. Mexico is also a member of the CPTPP.

The UK exports to Mexico totalled £2.6 billion for the four quarters to the end of Q1 2023. Currently, the 14th largest global economy, it is predicted to be in the top 10 by 2040. The World Bank now classes Mexico as an upper-middle-income country and this is demonstrated by the rapidly expanding middle class.
