Midlands-based ethnic minority owned or led businesses with credible export experience are invited to join this mission to Philadelphia, during The World Trade Center’s Bringing the World to PA 2024 tour: Held in partnership with the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) Midlands, MSDUK, The Eastern Minority Supplier Council (EMSDC), the British-American Business Council and The World Trade Center of Greater Philadelphia.
About this mission
The UK government recognises the importance of equal access to opportunities for businesses and is committed to addressing the barriers faced by Black, Asian and other ethnic minority business owners.
The U.S. federal government requires any contractor whose contract for goods and services is expected to exceed $700,000 ($1.5 million for construction) to set and meet aggressive goals of subcontracting spend with diverse suppliers. This mission aims to tap into that requirement to help ethnic minority owned or led businesses from the Midlands to grow through exporting.
Why Philadelphia?
The USA is the biggest single export market for Midlands businesses, with £9.4B worth of goods sold there in 2022. The Philadelphia Northeast Corridor market has a population of about 6.5 million consumers.
Philadelphia’s economy has strong synergies with the Midlands. Sectors such as Financial and Professional Services, Health and Life Sciences, Education and Research, Advanced Manufacturing, Clean Energy and Environmental Services and Retail are all strong there and offer great opportunities for Midlands exporters.
Philadelphia's strategic location between the economic and political centres of the United States, progressive governance, diverse economy, world-class institutions, infrastructure, and supportive business environment make it an enticing destination for international businesses seeking opportunities in the United States.
