Japanese investor targets UK tech start-ups with global potential

Country: Japan

Global Brain Corporation, one of the largest venture capital funds in Japan, has chosen London to establish its European headquarters after being impressed by the disruptive technologies pioneered by UK start-ups.

The fund plans to invest £35 million over the next five years, focusing on the fields of AI, the cloud, cyber security, fintech, automotive, robotics, aerospace and healthcare.

The number of new technology companies launched in the UK saw double digit growth for the second successive year during 2018, rising by 14% and providing a strong pipeline of investment opportunities for Global Brain.

It has already invested in three UK businesses, which Naoki Kamimaeda, who leads Global Brain Corporation’s European office, believes all have global potential.

Demonstrating technological expertise

This includes Cambridge-based Geospock, which is developing new kinds of databases to manage and analyse the geo-temporal data that will support the development of smart cities and autonomous vehicles.

Richard Baker, CEO at GeoSpock, comments: “Our Spatial Big Data Platform – the first of its kind – is a revolutionary approach to data analytics and demonstrates GeoSpock’s leading technological expertise.”

Global Brain has also taken a stake in another Cambridge-based firm, Undo, which has created a new generation of software debugging technology, helping developers bring their software products to market and fix bugs far more quickly than ever before.

Finally, London-based Seldon is a pioneer in the field of machine learning deployment, helping advance the development and deployment of technologies such as facial recognition systems.

A strong supply of investable businesses

Naoki said: “As a Japanese fund we’re looking to invest in start-ups that we can connect with our large Japanese corporations, but the technologies these start-ups are developing have applications around the world.

“The UK has a wealth of prestigious research institutions and universities, including Cambridge University, Oxford University, UCL and Imperial College London, which I’ve found are producing a very strong supply of investable businesses. There are also lots of angel investors here, who help to foster promising start-ups.”

Help and support is on hand

Global Brain Corporation, which has around $1.3 billion US of assets under its management and offices in Tokyo, London, Singapore, Seoul and San Francisco, expects to make at least three more investments in UK start-ups within months, and Naoki credits the Department for International Trade (DIT) for its help in establishing its European operation in London.

Naoki said: “When we started looking into the UK market, DIT were able to introduce me to many start-ups, as well as other Venture Capital firms and banks.

“They were also very helpful in helping with the process of setting up our European headquarters, including things like applying for visas. The whole process went very smoothly.”
