Professor Boulton has authored more than 500 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters, mainly on diabetic neuropathy and foot complications.

He was the principal invited lecturer at the launch of the American Diabetes Association's Foot Care Council. Among his many awards, his contribution to worldwide care of the diabetic foot was honoured by receiving the American Diabetes Association's Roger Pecoraro Lectureship, the EASD Camillo Golgi prize, the first recipient of the international award on diabetic foot research and the 2008 ADA Harold Rifkin award for distinguished international service in the cause of diabetes.

Professor Boulton, together with Dr Henry Connor, was the founding Chairman of the Malvern diabetic foot meetings which have been held every two years since 1986. At that time there were no regular meetings that focused on diabetic foot problems, and the Malvern foot conferences are now internationally known.

He was also the founding chair of the Diabetic Foot Study Group and was previously Chairman of Postgraduate Education and then program chair, for the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD). He is a former chair of the ADA Footcare Interest Group and was President of the EASD. Currently President of the International Diabetes Federation and Chairman of EURADIA (European Alliance for Diabetes Research).

His undergraduate training was at the Middlesex Hospital, and his MD on 'Microvascular Haemodynamics in the Diabetic Foot' was awarded by the University of London.

He contributes to research into complications of diabetes, particularly foot complications, and new technologies in diabetes care including devices and diabetes education. He has developed a nationally renowned Diabetes Centre and Diabetes Foot Clinic.

Gerry has been the clinical lead for Diabetes UK’s 'Putting Feet First' campaign and has contributed to NICE guidelines on the diabetic foot (CG10, CG119 and NG 19) and the NCEPOD recommendations on lower limb amputations and perioperative care.

He has been the NHS Diabetes Clinical lead for diabetes in-patient care and foot disease.

He is the innovator and lead of the National Diabetes Inpatient Audit. He is the immediate past President of the Endocrine and Diabetes Section of the Royal Society of Medicine, Chair of Diabetes UK's Clinical Study Group in Acute Care and the Diabetes Clinical Lead for the 'Getting It Right First Time' project.
