Luxembourg: a snapshot
The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg
The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is a very small country, bordered by Belgium to the west, Germany to the east, and France to the south. Despite its small size, it is known for its beautiful landscapes and numerous castles, but most of all, because of its role as a founding member of the European Union. The country is also a global financial hub and home to many international institutions. As the term “Grand Duchy” suggests it is a parliamentary democracy headed by a constitutional Monarch, the Grand Duke.
In Luxembourg you can find three official languages: Luxembourgish, French, and German and you can hear many more languages when you walk around in the city. The capital of Luxembourg which is also called Luxembourg is known for its stunning old town, fortifications, and the Grand Ducal Palace. In addition to this, you can find four other prominent regions: the Ardennes and their natural parks; the Müllerthal, also named the "Little Luxembourgish Switzerland" due to its beautiful wild nature; the Moselle and its vineyards; and finally, the Terres Rouges, the land of mines, in the south of Luxembourg.
