Foreword from the Department for Business and Trade
The UK Department for Business and Trade (DBT) is the department for economic growth. We support businesses to invest, grow and export, creating jobs and opportunities across the UK.
As an industry, Fintech is fast and fiercely competitive. The UK remains a global leader thanks to our world-renowned financial services sector, empowering business environment and innovative approach, evident across supportive policy and regulatory frameworks. That’s why year-on-year the UK remains the best place for Fintechs to start and scale anywhere in the world.
The diversity of our Fintech ecosystem says a great deal, with over 40% of people in the sector coming from overseas - either to develop their careers, scale their business or both. We are also delighted to be home to the highest number of Fintech Unicorns in Europe.
We remain the world’s largest net exporter of Financial Services, with a trade surplus of £92 billion in 2022. The UK continues to show resilience against the backdrop of a challenging global economic environment. In addition, the UK is the leading destination in Europe for investors, having secured $5.1 billion across 409 deals in 2023 - more than the next 28 European countries combined.
These credentials showcase not only that the UK business environment is ripe for investment, but also the capabilities and expertise that exist on our shores to help build Fintechs into global powerhouses.
Two years ago, DBT accepted Innovate Finance’s invitation to co-chair the International Fintech Group, a 20-strong collective of global Fintech companies set up to promote and support the UK Fintech sector internationally.
This year, we are continuing to drive forward a key objective of the group – to enhance the UK’s presence at major global events – with our second “whole-of-UK” pavilion here at Money/2020. DBT has partnered with 8 key stakeholders to deliver this UK-wide mission.
In 2024, overseas businesses continue to look beyond London and take advantage of Fintech talent and collaborate with the innovative clusters across the UK.
At Money/2020, we are delighted to once again showcase the breadth of investment opportunities and depth of export support available across the UK. Our UK Pavilion is home to a suite of experts from the UK’s nations and regions - including Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, the West Midlands and the North of England – ready to equip you with the tools, knowledge and networks you need to land, expand and thrive in the UK.
We warmly welcome a conversation to discuss opportunities that best fit your business interest – whether that be exporting from the UK overseas, investing into the UK Fintech ecosystem or collaborating with UK Pavilion partners.
We look forward to meeting you!
