Overcoming testing challenges of the evolving grid

Technical Workshop | In Person | Australia

Venue: Dockside, Darling Harbour, Sydney, Australia

Join us for a one-day technical workshop on overcoming testing challenges of the evolving grid.

The power system is evolving, centralised generation is being displaced and complemented with distributed energy resources, which is creating a need for “non-conventional” network equipment like phase shifting transformers and synchronous condensers. Reducing network inertia requires that protection and control elements are added to the system to support network stability, either through load shedding, frequency control ancillary services or anti islanding protection elements.

Meanwhile the capability of digital protection devices is being exploited to implement substations which have inter-device communications implemented using Ethernet interfaces as opposed to copper hardwiring. With all of these changes in the power system, the test tools and procedures required to thoroughly and efficiently test also need to evolve.

This workshop will discuss and present proposals for industry best practice for the following topics:

  • Phase Shifting Transformer protection testing
  • Finding the limits of your protection scheme
  • Anti-islanding protection testing
  • Verification of frequency support system performance
  • Automated signalling and interlocking testing in digital substations
