The British Residence
Rue Ducale/Hertogenstraat 17

Welcome to the British Residence in Brussels.

The British Ambassador's official residence, the former Hôtel de Croÿ, is located at 17, rue Ducale/Hertogsstraat. It is a large and elegant terraced town house facing the Brussels central Warande Park. The building was acquired by the British Government after the restoration of the embassy following the end of the Second World War.

It was built around 1830 but maintains the character of the Austrian phase of Belgian history. Extensive reconstruction works were carried out in 1923-29, with the help of Maison Jensen of Paris, followed by considerable further alterations in 1934. The interior is of outstanding quality and contains exceptionally fine 18th-century boiseries, textiles and furniture.

17 Rue Ducale today continues as the residence of the bilateral ambassador to Belgium, the UK Ambassador to the EU and the UK Ambassador to NATO. It was thoroughly refurbished during the 2000s and additionally adapted to provide a pied-a-terre for British ministers visiting Brussels for meetings, events and negotiations with their Belgian, European and international partners.
