UK Science at the cutting edge of tackling
Antimicrobial Resistance and Infectious Diseases

The UK’s history of innovation and research in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) since the discovery of penicillin by Sir Alexander Fleming in 1928, is marked by significant scientific achievements and a proactive stance in policy and global health leadership.

UK Government’s 2019 national action plan for AMR included the commitment to test solutions to create an incentive for companies to invest in new antimicrobials, by evaluating and paying for selected products in a different way from other medicines. This built on the recommendations of the 2016 O’Neill Report: Tackling Drug-Resistant Infections Globally.

The UK has long prided itself on being a hotbed of innovation with a world-class range of diverse organisations generating global solutions to the AMR and infectious disease challenge. The UK Government is keen to support the local industry, collaborate with international partners on conducting related clinical trials and R&D, share expertise, and reach out to the world on trade and investment opportunities.
