SMALL STEPS FOR BIG RESULTS

The UK’s manufacturing businesses face the greatest technology driven change ever in their history. This session will explore how manufacturers are utilising digital technologies to deliver efficiency improvements in their firms. Hear from industry peers that are already driving change in their industries and how they have reduced costs, increased margins and improved lead-times.

TRAIN TO RETAIN

Accessing the right skills and finding the right talent remain stubborn blockages for UK manufacturers. Make UK will in its 2020 conference look at new and innovative ways at solving the skills challenge and doing more with less, all in the build up to the UK’s new migration rules which will restrict manufacturers to UK talent only for many technical and vocational skills. Focussing on what’s available in the UK labour market, the session will focus on upskilling workers already in the workplace and also how some manufacturers have been successful in unlocking new talent from pools.

HOLLOW SUPPLY CHAIN: A VERY BRITISH PROBLEM?

UK Steel Powered by Make UK

It is argued that the UK manufacturing sector is increasingly typified by hollowed out supply chains, with OEM’s and tier 1’s more and more reliant on imports for their supply of components and materials. Does the UK differ from other developed economies in this respect? Is this a problem that can or should be reversed? And if so, what can be done to turn things around and what would the benefits of doing so be?
