Northern Powerhouse Virtual Tech Trade Mission to Malaysia

Monday, 5 July 2021 - Monday, 19 July 2021

About the event

The Department for International Trade (DIT) is delighted to partner with the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (BMCC) and invite Northern Powerhouse companies to join us on this virtual trade mission.

The mission will focus on introducing Malaysia and providing information on the technology sector within this exciting market.

Strategically located in the heart of SE Asia, Malaysia is a preferred gateway for companies when it comes to accessing other markets in ASEAN. The Malaysian government’s focus on digital infrastructure and transformation, favourable tax incentives, ease of doing business and a supportive ecosystem for market entry creates vast opportunities for global players in the tech sector.

According to the Ministry of Finance (2021), Malaysia’s digital economy grew by 18.5% year-on-year from 2015 to 2019*.  The recent launch of MYDigital Blueprint (2021) further cements the government’s commitment to digitalise the public and private sectors through initiatives in smart cities, education, financial services, cybersecurity, e-commerce, data sharing, manufacturing and logistics, green tech and emerging technologies**.

As a key part of UK trade negotiations, the UK Government continues to pursue accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).  The CPTPP is a Free Trade Agreement ("FTA") between 11 countries including Malaysia.

Delegates will have the opportunity to:

  • Receive extensive support throughout and following the mission;
  • Attend a pre-mission briefing and on-screen pitching session on 17 June 2021;
  • Access a bespoke one-to-one business matchmaking programme of minimum 3 meetings with potential local partners between 05-19 July 2021;
  • Attend a post mission session to exchange peer-to-peer best practices and review follow-up actions.
