The world’s cities generate over 2 billion tonnes of solid urban waste each year. With rapid urban development, growing populations and economic expansion, this figure is set to rise to 3.4 billion over the next 30 years.

Many Governments have been increasing their focus on resource efficiency and promoting a circular economy. Policies to this effect have been implemented to tackle the throwaway culture and change our resource use, production, consumption and waste behaviours at a high level. Ultimately, this is to promote closing material loops by maintaining the value of products, materials and resources in the economy for as long as possible.

But the most densely populated cities are those facing the most difficult challenges manage their waste and achieve this, as resources are only in use for a short period of time and lost through being landfilled or downcycled. Waste is more and more perceived as a valuable resource for the European economy, in recent years, cities are increasingly interested in implementing initiatives for recovering resources from their organic waste, usually as part of circular and bioeconomy strategies.

This virtual conference brings together cities, consultants and sustainability NGOs to discuss barriers and solutions for waste transformation, and we will hear from companies offering cutting-edge technological solutions to help us unlock this value. .
