Early Career Researcher Afternoon

This year’s virtual Early-Career Researcher Event will be held on March 30th from 12:30-17:30 (BST) with networking socials either side. Using a mixture of small-group breakout rooms, panel discussions, and presentations by guest speakers, we will cover a variety of fundamental topics within academia, such as disseminating research and writing a grant, as well as take a look at the different possible career pathways available to ECRs. We will also be hosting a fun social on either side of the event to facilitate networking. For more details, please see our official programme below.

12:45 - Developing research ideas and nutrition/eating behaviour research in an online setting
Presentations from Dr. Beth Mead and Dr. Lauren McGale, followed by breakout room discussions
 
14.00 - Coffee/tea break
 
14:10 - Career development both in and out of academia
Presentations from Dr. Ciarán Forde and Dr. Stephanie Kremer, followed by a panel discussion with these speakers as well as Dr. Victoria Whitelock and Miss Pauline Oustric about career paths and how to network
 
15:00 - Disseminating research - two sides of the publication coin
Presentations from Dr. Dave Mela and Dr. Emma Haycraft on how to write and review a paper

15:55 - Grants – demystifying the grant process
Presentation from Prof. Jeff Brunstrom, followed by a panel discussion with the speaker, Dr. Eric Robinson, and Dr. Monica Mars on their insights and experiences of the grant application process
 
16:45 - Overcoming the bumps and bruises of academia: building a resilient mindset
A panel discussion with Dr. Gemma Witcomb, Dr. Laura Wilkinson, Prof. Jackie Blissett, and Dr. Jason Thomas on resilience, handling rejections, and caring for your mental health in academia.
