Preparing for the Storm: Climate Shocks and Insolvency Risk in Latin America

With forecasts pointing to a potentially strong El Niño in late 2026 and early 2027, climate-related economic risks are once again coming into focus across Latin America and the Caribbean. But El Niño is only one example of the environmental and climate-related pressures increasingly affecting businesses across the region.

From extreme weather events and El Niño-related disruptions to the growing impact of sargassum across Caribbean economies, particularly tourism-dependent markets such as the Dominican Republic, these events can have consequences that extend far beyond the initial physical or environmental impact.

The experience of the 1997–98 El Niño demonstrated how a major climate event can disrupt supply chains, interrupt business operations, increase financial distress and defaults, and place pressure on otherwise viable businesses. More recent challenges, including recurring sargassum influxes in the Caribbean, similarly illustrate how environmental events can affect tourism, infrastructure, operating costs and local economies.

This timely webinar will examine how climate and environmental shocks can translate into financial distress and insolvency risk, and whether Latin America’s insolvency and restructuring frameworks are equipped to respond.

Drawing on experiences from across Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as recent reforms and ongoing legislative developments, leading practitioners and experts will explore how different jurisdictions are preparing, where gaps may remain, and what lessons can be learned from previous crises.
