A look at the upcoming IUMI annual conference

In the second of the IUMI podcast series, listen to IUMI Secretary General Lars Lange discuss the upcoming IUMI annual conference. Due to the current coronavirus environment, IUMI is - for the first time - taking its highly anticipated event online and Lars chats about how IUMI came to this decision and what you can expect from the new format.

For the fourth time, IUMI is returning to the great maritime city of Stockholm but – for the first time in its history – this conference will be held online.

The current challenging global conditions where social distancing and international travel is restricting our normal daily lives have led us to re-format this year’s annual IUMI conference.

Taking advantage of technology, we are moving the conference online and widening its reach. In doing so, we hope to embrace a broader cross-section of marine insurance participants than ever before and, in particular, we hope that younger underwriters will also choose to attend.

The conference is well known for its comprehensive and high-quality agenda and IUMI’s Technical Committees remain committed to developing relevant and topical workshops and securing expert speakers. We will soon be announcing the detail of this year’s conference programme. COVID-19 and its consequences for our business will be on the agenda as well as discussions on the impact of sustainability and digitalization on marine insurance. Many other topical issues will complement this core debate. The common theme this year is “Navigating changing climates – delivering expertise to shape the future”.

We are planning to hold one workshop each day over a 90 - 120 minute session. Each session will run twice a day to ensure all time zones are able to participate. Sessions will comprise a mix of presentations, discussion and online Q&A.

To ensure all participants are able to attend all workshops – and to avoid extended time away from the “office” – this year’s conference will be spread over a two-week period: Mon, 14 – Fri, 25 September.

In addition, the conference website www.iumi2020.com and the conference app will be available allowing all participants to plan their attendance, view background information and interact with the speakers, panellists and each other.

This year’s conference fee is significantly reduced and without travel and accommodation costs, the event represents excellent value for money. The fee, which includes access to all ten workshop sessions, is €500 net for IUMI members. This year, we are welcoming non-members (including, for example, insurance brokers, agents and related service providers) for a fee of €600 net.

We would have preferred to have welcomed you in person to the magical maritime city of Stockholm. Sadly, that’s not possible this year. However, we are excited to be the first organising team to stage the conference in a revolutionary new format and we sincerely hope that you will embrace the change and support the event. We are confident that you will learn a lot and meet (virtually) a wide range of new friends and colleagues – and all with a Swedish flavour! We look forward to you joining us.

Date: 6 April 2020

IUMI and the Stockholm organizers of the 2020 IUMI Conference are continuing to monitor the development of the COVID-19 crisis very carefully. The health and safety of all participants will take priority as we continue to plan.

As of today (6 April 2020) we are hoping that the conference will take place as planned from Sunday 13 - Wednesday 16 September 2020. However, depending on how the crisis develops, we may have to shift the conference dates to the very end of this year. For the time being, please plan for a September conference but a final decision on when the conference will take place will be made by Monday 11 May at the very latest.

Registration for the conference has been postponed and will not open until the final decision on the dates has been made. Please check the website (www.iumi2020.com and https://iumi.com/events/annual-conference) for updates.
