Teaching Course: 'Caring for Intimacy and Sexuality in MS'
 
This teaching course is organized by WIS, since 10 years the Workgroup on Intimacy and Sexuality of the National MS Center in Melsbroek (B). Number of participants is limited to 40 persons. There will be a major interactive part, organized in subgroups and guided by WIS-team members.
 
GOALS:
The teaching course aims
  • to facilitate explicit care for intimacy and sexuality in the contact with PwMS
  • to train a low barrier communication of professionals about intimate topics and problems
  • to provide close interaction with NMSC WIS-team members
  • to learn from anothers' experience: success and failures
  • to deliver practical tools to-start-with-from-tomorrow-on
  • to inspire to build bridges in the near future

 Plenary session: 'WARMING UP' - Introduction
 by Caroline Vermeulen (PT & pelvic floor therapist)   and An van Nunen (MD, Rehabilitation Physician)

  • Short overview of problems with intimacy and sexuality in MS
  • Group formation and installation

 Group session (12-20 persons): OVERCOMING YOUR RED CHEEKS' - Training in Communication
 
  • Interactive group discussion on film fragments: do's and don'ts
  • How to build bridges from my professional field to the field of intimacy and sexuality of my patient?

 'COOLING DOWN' - Lunch break

Group session (12-20 persons): 'GO FOR IT' - Training in Advice Delivery and Using Tools
  • Quantum-model: a tool for communication about sexual problems
  • Using tools for advice: pleasure box, position cushions, educational brochures, books,...
  • Using tools for sensibilisation and growing visibility

Plenary session: 'TAKE ME HOME' - Insight in Organizational Models and 10 Years of NMSC Experience
  • Introduction in PLISSIT and BLISS: models helping to organize care for intimacy and sexuality in your organization
