Meet the Delegates from the UK's Northern Powerhouse Region
Foreword:
We are excited to introduce you to a delegation of innovative business from the North of England, also known as the Northern Powerhouse, which is the UK government’s vision for a super-connected, globally-competitive northern economy with a flourishing private sector and highly-skilled population ready to take its place on the world stage.
It brings together people from across the North of England, encompassing the cities of Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield, Hull and Newcastle to create a fast-growing economy.
The Northern Powerhouse is well known for its world leading creativity and design industries and its heritage of manufacturing know-how is delivering global innovative products. Life sciences, energy, financial services, digital, advanced manufacturing and engineering are just some of the other areas where the North excels. Supported by high-speed rail links, excellent transport connections, seven international gateway airports and 12 major foreign trading ports the region has great freight, logistics and transport links to all global markets.
It is also home to the N8 research partnership, which includes the Universities of Durham, Newcastle, York, Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool and Lancaster coming together to promote deeper collaboration between universities, business and society, establish innovative research capabilities, programmes of national and international prominence and to drive economic growth by generating income, supporting jobs and new businesses.
The birthplace of the industrial revolution – the Northern Powerhouse laid the foundations for the world we know today. The abundance of expertise across the Northern Powerhouse is in high demand around the world and, by working together, we can transform the local economy and create a more prosperous future.
Construction is one of the key industries for the North of England where business excel and offer innovative products and services that meet the global demand.
Places like the Integrated Civil and Infrastructure Research (ICAIR) facility in Sheffield is just one of the many examples that underpin the regions’ strength and capabilities, making the North of England the ideal place to do business with. ICAIR is a national research facility that seeks to apply world leading research to the construction and infrastructure sectors, with the goal of delivering step changes in productivity and resilience.
Additionally, challenges as a result of climate change and a Government goal set to decarbonise all sectors by 2050 to meet the UK’s net zero target, have positioned UK companies at the forefront of sustainable development with an ambition to lead the way globally.
We feel passionately about transforming the sector as it does not only result in an industry that is more productive, more highly skilled and ready to grasp the opportunities of the global infrastructure market, but it means benefits across other sectors and local communities for a better tomorrow.
Meet the companies from the North of England who are taking part in this trade mission and are a reflection of the vast experience and expertise the UK has to offer.

Company Profile:
Burmatex® is one of the UK’s leading designers and manufacturers of contract carpet tiles and planks. With a heritage dating back to 1917 in textile recycling, we uphold this tradition through eco2matters®, our commitment to environmentally conscious manufacturing. Our dedication to sustainability, coupled with our design focus, has resulted in an innovative portfolio that caters to architects, specifiers, and contractors across various sectors and budgets to suit the education, hospitality, leisure, commercial and public sectors.
Burmatex®’s product ranges include multilevel loop, loop pile, structure bonded®, fibre bonded, cut pile and carpets in sheet and tiles, as well as performance barrier system and entrance matting products. The company has total control over all quality and environmental aspects of its products’ design, manufacture, storage, and distribution across 50+ countries. All Burmatex® products are rigorously tested and supported by a full 15-year guarantee making them ideal for heavy contract situations.
Sustainability criteria:
We believe that what we do matters, that the ecology of our planet matters, and that eco2matters®. We have therefore significantly invested in product specific EPDs. This ensures you know the exact carbon footprint and can make an informed decision when deciding which product to use. All our products can help achieve points towards sustainability assessment certifications LEED, SKA, BREEAM and WELL BUILDING Standards.
In order to boost carpet re-use, Burmatex has introduced an adhesive free installation option in combination with IOBAC. Traditional adhesive-based installation methods can contaminate the floor covering, making it difficult to reuse or easily recycle, with landfill sometimes the only option. On uplift, the sub-floor is often also contaminated with adhesive and materials, and needs intensive cleaning and remediation. Concrete sub-floors may need carbon-intensive cementitious screeding. Specifying the use of reversible fixing mechanisms such as adhesive-free installation enables the flooring to be designed for disassembly. This means it can be cleanly uplifted at the end of its first life, ready to be reused elsewhere. The sub-floor is also clean and immediately ready for the next installation, and all this contributes further towards sustainability assessment certifications such as BREEAM, SKA ratings and LEED.
Objectives of joining the DBT Trade Mission:
• Looking to connect with sustainability minded architects, designers and specifiers and reconnecting with existing contacts
• Looking at finalising plans to open an office in UAE
• Looking to understand the status and ambition of sustainable development in UAE and GCC
