Meet the Delegates from the UK's Southern England Region

Foreword:

The Department for Business and Trade are delighted to be bringing a delegation of businesses from the Southern England infrastructure sector to visit the UAE to coincide with both the BIG 5 exhibition and COP28.

Construction is one of the largest sectors in the UK economy – with a turnover of £370 billion, contributing £138 billion in value added to the UK economy and employing 3.1 million people (9% of the total UK workforce).

Southern England is a key player in the global drive towards sustainable infrastructure. It's the base for many leading UK corporations and industry associations involved in the infrastructure sector. Furthermore, it's a breeding ground for numerous innovative small businesses that are at the forefront of transforming critical aspects of the infrastructure supply chain.

These businesses have rooted their success in a strong commitment to making infrastructure more environmentally friendly. They are closely linked through robust local business networks that facilitate the exchange of ideas and innovations, accelerating the transition to sustainable infrastructure.

What distinguishes these businesses, is their dedication to pioneering new systems and cutting-edge technologies. This often comes to fruition through collaborations with the prestigious educational institutions in the region. Notably, Southern England is home to three of the world's top 10 universities, and this academic connection serves as a catalyst for pushing the boundaries of knowledge and driving the development of innovative infrastructure solutions.

In essence, Southern England is not just a significant contributor to sustainable infrastructure; it exemplifies how the synergy of industry, entrepreneurship, and education can drive transformative change. The region's shared commitment to eco-friendly infrastructure, supported by strong business networks and academic partnerships, positions it as a leader in the global sustainability movement.”

hyperTunnel

Alastair B. Douglas - Senior Commercial Manager

Visit: www.hypertunnel.co.uk
Email: alastair.douglas@hypertunnel.co.uk
Tel: +44 (0)7588 746731

Company Profile:

hyperTunnel is a tech company. We are transforming how tunnels and underground structures are designed, built and maintained — using AI, machine learning and swarm robotics. We have already built the world’s first tunnel constructed entirely by swarming robots.

Conventional underground construction operates in one place at a time. In contrast, hyperTunnel robots swarm throughout an entire underground construction space, simultaneously working everywhere.

Our approach is faster, safer, more sustainable and lower cost. This means many more underground projects become viable, from construction to enlargement and maintenance. hyperTunnel isn’t just a groundbreaking new way to build underground; it allows us to reimagine how we can live, move and connect.

Sustainability criteria:

hyperTunnel technology presents an innovative approach to constructing, repairing, and monitoring underground structures, aligning closely with global carbon emission reduction goals and climate change mitigation efforts. Key benefits include reduced energy consumption through battery-powered robotic equipment, minimised cement usage via precise data calculations, use of low carbon concrete, and our 3D-printing method that conserves raw materials, reduces water and energy consumption, and minimizes waste generation.

Furthermore, hyperTunnel prioritises sustainability through the repurposing of tunnel materials and the implementation of smaller construction sites, reducing local community disruption, land usage, and environmental impact. Circular economy principles further promote equipment reuse.

Additionally, hyperTunnel's monitoring and repair capabilities extend the lifespan of underground assets, leading to cost savings and reduced environmental impact while enhancing safety.

Objectives of joining the DBT Trade Mission:

• Engage with government agencies interested in bringing hyperTunnel technology to the United Arab Emirates, with an initial focus on the implementation of pilot projects
• Meet with civil engineering contractors who are interested in becoming an exclusive distributor of hyperTunnel technology within the region

Our product range includes: Scale control – including water conditioning and softening, Bacterial control – including copper silver ionisation, chlorine dioxide, chlorine, ultraviolet systems and chemical dosing, Filtration, Grey water systems, Reverse osmosis systems.

Our equipment has been used in buildings in the UAE including One Za’abeel in Dubai, Bee’ah Headquarters and Sharjah Art Foundation, and the Abu Dhabi Armed Forces Officers Club. Hydrotec have become the first water treatment company, globally, to produce accredited Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) showing the embodied carbon of our products. Hydrotec is opening a subsidiary in the UAE and hiring our first full-time employee to support growth across the country and expand operations.

Sustainability criteria:

Hydrotec have become the first water treatment company, globally, to produce accredited Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for a comprehensive range of water softeners, filters, and bacterial control technology, showing their commitment to net-zero goals. Our HydroION water softener range has been engineered to now exceed 98% efficiency, compared to the standard 90% in the industry, it uses 60% less salt than standard softeners and contributes to sustainability.

One way many stakeholders are looking at reducing carbon emissions is by recycling water used in their building, one such way is by reclaiming grey water, which is waste water from hand basins, washing machines, showers and baths, for this we’ve launched the HydroMOS GW which is a fully packaged system for the treatment of grey water. This is more cost-effective and more sustainable than many existing greywater products in the GCC.
