Introduction to the inaugural Civil Nuclear Showcase Hackathon

The inaugural Civil Nuclear Showcase Hackathon, sponsored by EDF Energy, challenges the aptitudes of the UK’s young nuclear students, apprentices and graduates to use innovative thinking to tackle real-world problems faced by the contemporary nuclear sector. The Hackathon will be introduced to the audience by one of the question setters, Kirsty Hewitson (VP Innovation, National Nuclear Laboratory).

New build and the nuclear fuel cycle

Nuclear power is a key strategic interest for the UK, and an important part of international efforts to reduce carbon emissions whilst keeping pace with increasing energy demand. This session will provide the latest updates on the UK’s new build programme, and how the UK’s experience in new build and fuel cycle can be deployed on projects worldwide.

Julia Pyke, Nuclear Development Director, EDF Energy; Zheng Dongshan, CEO of CGN UK; and Duncan Hawthorne, CEO of Horizon, will provide updates on the UK’s nuclear new build projects. Julia Pyke will also speak on the Nuclear Sector Deal’s cost reduction in nuclear new build workstream.

Laurent Odeh, CCO of URENCO will present on UK fuel cycle capability and reflect on URENCO’s 50th Anniversary.

David Durham, President, Plant Solutions, Westinghouse, will outline the company’s development plans.

Decommissioning and Waste Management

The international decommissioning market is undergoing a considerable expansion, estimated to be worth £250bn by 2030. This session will show how the UK is approaching its decommissioning programme, and how UK industry is driving innovation to reduce costs and improve efficiency.

Adrian Simper, Strategy and Technology Director, Nuclear Decommissioning Authority will introduce the NDA’s role and priorities across the UK’s legacy sites.

Jatinder Bhart, Director, Nuclear Sector Deal PMO, will present on the Nuclear Sector Deal’s decommissioning cost reduction workstream.

Rebecca Weston, Chief Operating Officer of Sellafield Ltd, will introduce the topic of ‘Growing Decommissioning Capability’, followed by project and initiative case studies from David Wilson, Senior Project Director, SNC Lavalin/Atkins; John Maddison, Director of Engineering Development and IVC, Wood Nuclear; Kirsty Hewitson, VP Innovation and IP, National Nuclear Laboratory.

Nuclear Sector Deal Exports and Investment Objectives

Andrew Storer, CEO of the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, will speak on the importance of international collaboration to success in the nuclear sector, and UK initiatives under the Nuclear Sector Deal to enhance competitiveness and productivity in the UK supply chain.

Finance and Professional Services

Delivering nuclear projects relies heavily on a range of specialist professional services including finance, legal, and insurance. This session will illustrate the UK’s approaches to financing nuclear projects, and how other professional services can help nuclear projects succeed.

This session will be a panel discussion between four experts in this field: Darryl Murphy, Head of Infrastructure Debt, Aviva; Clare Burgess, Partner, Clifford Chance LLP; Dr Tim Stone, Chair of Nuclear Risk Insurers Ltd and Chair of the Nuclear Industry Association; Richard Abadie, UK, Africa, CEE and Middle East Relationship Partner, PwC. The panel will be chaired by Fiona Reilly, Managing Director, FiRe Energy.

People, Skills, Diversity


Nuclear projects depend on having capable and well-equipped engineers and professionals to deliver projects for the long-term. This session will highlight UK initiatives to build the nuclear workforce of the future, drawing on a wide range of perspectives from across the industry and facilitated by Rob Ward, Nuclear Sector Development Manager at Copeland Borough Council and Chair of the Young Generation Network.

The panel for this session will include:

Julia Pyke, Nuclear Development Director, EDF Energy, on why it’s important for the nuclear industry to focus on its people.

Dr Fiona Rayment, Executive Director of the Nuclear Innovation and Research Office, and Chair of the Nuclear Skills Strategy Group, on focus areas and progress being made against Nuclear Sector Deal targets for workforce diversity.

Lynsey Valentine, Strategy Director at Cavendish Nuclear and President of Women In Nuclear, on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the nuclear sector.

Emily Ball, Apprentice at EDF Energy, on what it’s like to be a nuclear apprentice and transferring to nuclear from another sector.

Matthew Goodall, Deputy Metallographer, Post Irradiation Examination (PIE), National Nuclear Laboratory, on why Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs) are crucial for staying at the cutting edge and creating specialist nuclear skills.

Alys Gardner, Business Development Manager at Cavendish Nuclear and Young Generation Network representative on the Nuclear Industry Council, on involving young people in the industry and the role of Shadow Boards.

Small and advanced reactors


Small and advanced reactors have the potential to transform the nuclear sector in adding to the range of nuclear power options to existing and emerging nuclear countries, and also promise valuable applications beyond generating energy. This session will provide a platform for leading small and advanced reactor developers, and how they plan to develop and deploy their designs.   

Diane Cameron, Director of the Nuclear Energy Division at Natural Resources Canada, will present on the role small and advanced reactors can play in decarbonisation, Canada’s SMR roadmap, and the importance of international collaboration in small and advanced reactor development and deployment.

A panel discussion will follow with perspectives from small and advanced reactor technology developers: David Sledzik, Executive, Sales and Product Management, GE-Hitachi; Simon Newton, Business Development Director, Moltex Energy; Alan Woods, Director, Strategy and Business Development, Rolls-Royce; Steve Threlfall, General Manager, U-Battery, chaired by Fiona Reilly, Managing Director, FiRe Energy.

The UK’s regulatory approach and international collaboration

Having effective and appropriate nuclear regulations is key to success in the nuclear sector, without compromising safety and security. The nuclear industry is changing, and regulators have a vital role to play. This session will provide an overview of the latest developments in the UK’s approach to regulation, and to the benefits of international collaboration between regulatory authorities.  

Dr Mina Golshan, Deputy Chief Inspector and Director of Sellafield, Decommissioning, Fuel and Waste Division, Office for Nuclear Regulation, will introduce the UK regulator’s priorities, and how ONR’s work is informed by international collaborations

Fusion

Fusion represents a revolutionary future for the nuclear sector and the world, and the UK is a leading member of the international effort to create energy through atomic fusion. This session will provide the latest updates on the UK’s approach to fusion and the next steps to realising fusion as an energy provider.

 

Tony Donné, Programme Director for EUROfusion, will open the session with an introduction to the international fusion landscape.

Prof. Ian Chapman, CEO of UK Atomic Energy Authority will present on the UK’s fusion programmes.

From a commercial perspective, Tom Jones, Vice President International Business Development of Assystem, will present on international collaboration at ITER; and Jonathan Carling, CEO of Tokamak Energy, and Nicholas Hawker, Co-Founder and CEO of First Light Fusion, will present from the perspective of private fusion companies.

Advanced Manufacturing, Tech and R&D


New and existing nuclear technologies depend for their success on commercial and academic organisations being at the cutting edge of nuclear technology and translating ground-breaking R&D into products and services which can be deployed on nuclear sites. This session will explore how the UK is supporting innovation, and the benefits of international collaboration in R&D.   

Current confirmed speakers include Si Dilks, Head of Nuclear and Renewable Innovation, BEIS; Wood Nuclear; Caroline Longman, Government Account Director, National Nuclear Laboratory; Prof. Steve Jones, Chief Technology Officer, Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre; and  Jesus Talamantes-Silva, R&D Director, Sheffield Forgemasters.

Conclusion of Civil Nuclear Showcase Hackathon

On day two, participants will prepare their presentations before pitching their ideas to the audience and a panel of industry experts during the closing plenary. The winning team will be determined by an audience vote.


The session will be moderated by the question setters, Kirsty Hewitson and Sama Bilbao Y Leon (Head of the Division of Nuclear Technology Development and Economics, OECD-Nuclear Energy Agency)
