SiReN Research Summit: Unlocking the Potential of AI in Healthcare Simulation Research
Tuesday 24 June 2025 – 09:00-17:00
Join us for the inaugural SiReN Research Summit, a unique platform for researchers, educators, and AI enthusiasts to explore the opportunities and challenges of integrating AI into healthcare simulation research. This one-day event fosters collaboration, innovation, and knowledge-sharing as we push the boundaries of simulation with emerging AI technologies.
Why Attend?
What to expect?
Who Should Attend?
Whether you are new to healthcare simulation research or are a seasoned investigator, the SiReN Research Summit offers a dynamic, supportive environment to explore the transformative potential of AI in healthcare simulation.

Carla Sa-Couto is a clinical simulation educator and senior researcher at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto, and RISE-Health (Portugal), with a background in Biomedical Engineering. A passionate simulation advocate for nearly 25 years, she was part of a pioneering research team developing simulation technology and educational programs. She was a member of the team that establishing Portugal’s first simulation center (2003), which she led from 2014 to 2022. As a research lead, she oversees national and international simulation-based projects and has received several research grants.
She actively contributes to scientific societies, currently chairing the European Simulation Research Network (SiReN)—a SESAM initiative—and serving on the executive committee of ASPiH (Association for Simulated Practice in Healthcare). She is also an active member of the EuSim Group.
Her current interests include interprofessional training, faculty development, and integrating emerging technologies (AR/VR/XR and AI) into healthcare education.
Gabriel Reedy is the editor-in-chief of Advances in Simulation, and a simulation researcher and educator. He is a professor at King’s College London (UK) and leads a master’s programme in health professions education, and frequently supports students and colleagues who are working to improve their academic writing.
Debra Nestel is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Healthcare Simulation, and a simulation researcher and educator. Based in Australia, she is a professor of healthcare simulation at Monash University and a professor of surgical education at the University of Melbourne. Debra leads masters' level faculty development programs in clinical simulation and surgical education and supervises graduate students in doctoral research.
Nicole Harder is the newly appointed editor-in-chief of Simulation in Healthcare, and holds an endowed professorship in Human Simulation at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada. Nicole is active nationally in simulation education and research, and facilitates simulation courses through the Canadian Association of School of Nursing. With a focus on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, Nicole works with graduate students and faculty on writing and publishing their innovative work.

SimUniversity will take place during the SESAM annual meeting and thus also create an opportunity for students to be exposed to simulation
content from international experts.
SiReN (Simulation Research Network) is a grass-roots, collaborative group of simulation researchers working at all levels—from early career researchers to experienced research colleagues—supported by SESAM.
The SESAM Mentoring Programme is a working alliance in which individuals work together over time, on a one-to-one basis, to support the personal and professional growth, development, and success of the relational partners through the provision of career and psychosocial support.
