Advocate

Advocate is the Bar’s national pro bono charity. We match people who are unable to obtain legal aid and cannot afford to pay with barristers who generously volunteer their time to provide free legal advice and representation.

Family law is at the heart of our work, making up over 30% of our caseload. These cases range from allegations of domestic abuse, child abduction, child relocation, child contact and many more – issues with life-changing consequences. The increased cost of living leaves more people representing themselves in court, often at great personal and emotional cost, and at a great disadvantage.

With the support of our panel of over 4,500 volunteer barristers across England and Wales, we ensure that those most in need are heard, guided, and represented. Any barrister with a practising certificate - from their second six all the way to KC - can join our panel and make a real difference to someone’s life.   

The demand for our service continues to grow year on year, with a 24% increase in requests for help last year. We are an independent charity, wholly reliant on the generosity of donors to continue to operate and meet our running costs. We are proud to be funded almost entirely by the Bar. 

We are delighted to be the charity partner of the LexisNexis Family Law Awards –as we work to meet the growing demand for our service. We look forward to joining LexisNexis in celebrating the achievements of practitioners who dedicate their expertise to supporting families.
