Organisation definitions
Non-Government Organisation
- An NGO is defined as a non-profit organisation, group or institution that operates independently from a government and has humanitarian or development objectives. (Source: UNDP)
Not-for-Profit Organisation
- A not‑for‑profit organisation is one that exists to deliver public or social benefit rather than to make profit for private individuals. In this way, surplus income is reinvested into the organisation's activities or aims. Not‑for‑profit organisations can include charities, clubs and associations, community or voluntary organisations, professional or trade bodies and co‑operatives. These organisations are typically set up for purposes such as charitable, educational, cultural, community, religious or social welfare activities. Definitions can be found in the HMRC VAT Charities Manual.
