Australian quantum security business expands UK presence with new partnership
Country: Australia
An Australian cybersecurity business is expanding its presence in the UK and created a ground-breaking new video messaging application after collaborating with two UK companies.
Canberra-headquartered QuintessenceLabs specialises in Quantum technology and was the winner of the Digital Economy and Security category at the Department for International Trade’s (DIT) UK Tech Rocketship Awards earlier this year. The business was one of 10 leading Australian technology companies selected from almost 200 candidates and was recognised for being an innovative and globally-ambitious scale-up with potential to succeed in the UK market.
Recent projects include its collaboration with market-leading British telecommunications company BT and Tech Mahindra’s UK Makers Lab, the company’s British research and development arm, to showcase an end to end video messaging application for businesses.
The application incorporates QuintessenceLabs’ qCrypt Key Management Server and is the first of its kind to be Quantum-secure. This means that it has the highest level of security and protects customers’ data from sophisticated attacks, including those from quantum computers, which are becoming an increasing threat as cyber technology continues to develop and advance.
The partnership with BT and Tech Mahindra comes as global demand for Quantum cybersecurity has increased dramatically over the past 18 months. Concern over how to make data and communication quantum-safe is growing both in the UK and worldwide, and this is propelling the growth of QuintessenceLabs. The business is the world-leader in high-speed Quantum key distribution, which is the most secure communication method by using Quantum mechanics.
Another example of how the UK brings innovation to life
This is the latest activity in the UK for QuintessenceLabs, which has been working with numerous British partners since 2013 as part of its plan to expand its presence in the UK. It chose to focus on the UK because of its world-leading technology ecosystem, and because it boasts more venture capital investment and unicorns than anywhere else in Europe. DIT in the UK and Australia has helped the business to build connections and a stronger network in the UK by introducing them to companies in the UK, including partners like BT and Tech Mahindra’s UK Makers Lab, as well as new customers.
Vikram Sharma, who spent 20 years building and managing technology companies before founding QuintessenceLabs, said: “The UK is one of the world’s cybersecurity leaders and has a pioneering role in shaping the future of the market by developing and investing in quantum technologies. This, combined with the calibre of innovative cybersecurity companies operating here, low corporation tax and highly skilled workers, makes it a great place to do business.”
Vikram Sharma added: “The support DIT gives to businesses looking to invest in the UK is invaluable and unmatched anywhere else. We’ve been active in the UK for a few years now and DIT has really helped us to expand and establish our presence by introducing us to key contacts and building our network here.
“The launch of the new video messaging application is an exciting time for QuintessenceLabs and Tech Mahindra’s UK Makers Lab and BT were the perfect partners for this project, as some of the most advanced companies in their field. We couldn’t have done it without the support of the DIT team in both Australia and the UK.”
Mike Ashwell, Head of UK Makers Lab said: “Tech Mahindra is delighted to be working with BT and QuintessenceLabs. Whilst this project is in the early development stage, the commercial opportunities are immense; it’s a very exciting time to be involved.”
