Decolonising Art History in Wikipedia

Lucy Panesar, UAL London College of Communication, l.panesar@lcc.arts.ac.uk, @LpanesarLucy

When you Google an artist’s name, the first site that often comes up is Wikipedia. But with Wikipedia being written mainly by older white men in the West, how effective is it in representing artists, practices and histories outside of the Western canon?

The Decolonising Wikipedia Network is an University of the Arts London initiative led by Lucy Panesar which supports students and staff to increase the visibility and credibility of under-represented and marginalised artists, practices and histories within Wikipedia. In this session, Lucy will present examples of Wikipedia editing by herself and other network members, and will then invite others to present their own examples of editing Wikipedia for decolonial purposes.

If you would like to present an example, please contact Lucy on l.panesar@lcc.arts.ac.uk

Call for Papers deadline 1 November 2021. Please submit your paper proposal to the convenor.
